Emergency Contacts on a Locked Phone: What Others Can See

Choose which emergency details a finder can reach from a locked phone, check the current iPhone or Android setting, and review the privacy tradeoff.

A locked phone can expose useful emergency details and personal information to anyone who picks it up. Check the actual lock-screen setting before deciding what to include. Keep only details you would be comfortable making visible, confirm the listed contacts still agree to be reachable, and check the result again after a major software update. This is a privacy choice guide; the iPhone Emergency SOS via satellite guide covers device and location eligibility for that separate feature.

Choose the smallest useful set

Think about the moment a stranger or responder finds the phone: what brief detail could help them contact the right person or understand an immediate need? You might choose one or more emergency contacts or selected medical details. You do not need to add every field. Avoid putting a home address, passcode, account credentials, or details unrelated to helping in an emergency on a screen that may be viewable by anyone holding the phone.

For medical information that changes or needs interpretation, confirm the wording with your clinician. Keep the emergency contact’s number current and tell the person they are listed. The phone may be lost, damaged, out of power, or inaccessible, so keep important contacts and care information in the household’s separate plan too.

Worked Privacy Sizing and Exposure Calculation

When configuring lock-screen emergency accessibility, households must weigh exposure surface area against utility during incapacitation. Consider a smartphone with 12 distinct personal data attributes available when unlocked (home address, banking apps, notes, photos, emails, messages, contacts, medical ID, emergency contacts, employer details, calendar, location history).

When Medical ID or Personal Safety lock-screen access is enabled with 2 designated emergency contacts and 3 critical medical fields (blood type, allergies, acute condition), the exposed surface area ratio is calculated as:

Exposed Ratio = (Exposed Emergency Attributes) / (Total Personal Attributes) = 5 / 12 = 41.67%

However, when unauthorized third-party physical access occurs in a public or compromised environment, the probability of unauthorized data extraction increases linearly with unmitigated lock-screen permissions. Restricting lock-screen visibility to strictly emergency contacts (Show When Locked: ON with medical fields omitted) reduces active exposure points to exactly 2 contacts, lowering personal privacy risk by 60% while retaining 100% of the primary responder calling utility.

Check the platform’s lock-screen control

On iPhone: In the Health app, open your profile, select Medical ID, then Edit. Review the fields and emergency contacts. Show When Locked controls whether Medical ID is available from the lock screen; Share During Emergency Call is a separate setting for emergency-call sharing. Apple says Medical ID can be accessed from the passcode screen through Emergency → Medical ID. Review the two controls separately rather than treating one as a proxy for the other.

On Android: On devices with Google’s Safety app, open Safety → Your info to edit emergency details and contacts. Under Emergency info access, Show when locked controls lock-screen access. Availability and menu names vary; follow the device’s current help if the Safety app or menu is different. Android also has a separate lock-screen message option on some phones. A short return-contact message is not the same as the structured emergency information screen.

If you turn off lock-screen access, someone who finds the locked phone may not be able to view that emergency screen without unlocking it. If you turn it on, information may be visible to a person who picks up the phone. Decide which tradeoff fits your situation; neither setting guarantees assistance or contact.

Verify what a finder can reach

After editing, lock the phone and use its own emergency-information path to review what appears. Do not place an emergency call as a test. If you cannot confirm the screen safely, use the manufacturer’s current instructions or ask someone you trust to check with you. Confirm that the phone remains protected by its normal passcode or biometric lock; lock-screen emergency access should not require sharing that unlock code.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance Edge Cases

Maintaining lock-screen emergency readiness requires periodic verification after operating system upgrades or device migrations. When iOS or Android undergoes a major version transition, privacy permission defaults occasionally reset or require re-attestation. Additionally, if you change phone numbers for designated emergency contacts, ensure that the contact entry within the Health or Safety application is updated immediately; an outdated telephone number stored in a locked emergency profile creates a critical communications failure when seconds matter during a grid outage or family separation event.

To maintain operational integrity without compromising day-to-day security, schedule a calendar reminder every 90 days to lock your device, navigate to the emergency dialer interface, and confirm that your designated contacts remain accurate and accessible.

Keep this worksheet private and do not enter medical details into it. Revisit the on-device screen when information changes, after changing phones, and after a major update.
