When your fiber provider says its network is resilient, that does not mean the fiber jack or optical network terminal (ONT) in your garage will stay on through a household blackout. The glass fiber delivers data; a local ONT still needs electricity. So may the gateway, Wi-Fi access points and any separate phone equipment.
This guide owns the fiber terminal and ISP power chain. For the generic watts-to-runtime calculation, use backup power for electronics rather than treating the ONT as a unique battery chemistry problem.
Trace the whole path before buying
| Component | Does it need local power? | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Optical network terminal / fiber jack | Usually yes | Exact model, provider-owned power adapter and approved backup |
| Broadband gateway or separate router | Yes for normal operation | Input voltage, adapter label, rated power and connection limits |
| Separate Wi-Fi access point or mesh node | Yes | Which nodes must remain powered for the intended room? |
| Ethernet switch or phone adapter | Often yes | Whether the voice/essential device uses it |
| Cordless phone base | Yes | Battery backup or an authorized nonpowered handset alternative |
| Upstream fiber equipment | Outside homeowner control | Whether provider service survives the same regional outage |
The California Public Utilities Commission notes that routers, Wi-Fi and fiber termination equipment can require customer-side backup. A UPS on only the Wi-Fi router cannot revive an unpowered ONT.
Voice-only battery backup is a frequent trap
Some provider battery solutions are expressly for telephone voice, not internet or TV. AT&T’s guidance names gateway, modem and ONT power dependencies; GFiber’s phone battery guide distinguishes a grid failure from a service outage and explains its particular voice-only path.
Do not generalize a provider’s 8-hour or 24-hour claim to your different service, Wi-Fi devices or internet browsing. Confirm whether your specific backup power unit provides broadband data and whether powered home handsets and alarm devices also need protection.
Find the actual watts without opening equipment
Read the exterior power labels and provider documentation from safe, dry access. Ask the provider whether your model has an approved backup option, its connector polarity/voltage requirements, allowed replacement battery and maintenance process. Do not modify the fiber termination device, bypass a power brick or enter a locked ISP utility closet.
For UPS sizing, the sum of actual supported loads matters, along with runtime at that load and equipment compatibility. A printed adapter’s maximum rating is not identical to measured operating power. If the household requires emergency voice access, test the supported phone path through an approved non-emergency procedure, not by making a false 911 call.
Power loss versus internet loss
| Event | Likely result of a powered ONT | Household fallback |
|---|---|---|
| Your home’s utility power stops, ISP network remains alive | Fiber may continue if all required customer equipment is backed up | UPS and approved devices |
| ISP upstream fiber or central equipment fails | Your ONT can be powered yet have no service | Cellular or another independent method if available |
| Wi-Fi access point alone fails | Wired data might remain, wireless clients may disconnect | Approved wired device or secondary power plan |
| Phone battery powers voice-only output | Calls may continue; internet can still be unavailable | Separate broadband/gateway plan |
No outage duration is guaranteed. Periodically check UPS battery health, alarms and safe software or device shutdown requirements.

Next action: ask the provider whether its battery supports internet data or voice only, then check which local devices must remain powered for the task that matters.
