Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms: A Household Planning Guide
Choose, place, test, maintain, and replace smoke and carbon monoxide alarms using the exact labels, manuals, local requirements, and household alert needs.
Start with a map, not a shopping cart. Mark every level, bedroom, separate sleeping area, fuel-burning appliance area, attached garage boundary, and place where an alert might be difficult to hear, see, or feel. Then record what is already installed before deciding what is missing.
An alarm is only useful when it detects the intended hazard, is permitted in that location, receives power, can alert the people present, and is maintained according to its exact instructions. A combination casing, app connection, or long-life battery does not answer all of those questions.
If an alarm is sounding now
Do not assume a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm is a nuisance signal. Follow the alarm’s emergency instructions. For suspected carbon monoxide, the CPSC says to get outside to fresh air and then call 911. For smoke or fire, leave, stay out, and call 911 from outside. Learn the difference between alarm, test, low-battery, fault, and end-of-life signals from the exact manual before an emergency; if the signal is uncertain, move to safety and call for help.
Inventory the alarms and the decision-makers
For every installed unit, write down:
- the brand, exact model, serial number, and manufacture or replace-by date;
- whether it detects smoke, carbon monoxide, heat, or more than one condition;
- its battery, hardwired, plug-in, or other power arrangement;
- whether and how it interconnects with other alarms;
- the safety standard or certification mark shown on the product label;
- the manual location and the meaning of each sound, light, display, and app notice;
- the last test, battery action, cleaning, service, and planned replacement;
- the landlord, property manager, alarm company, electrician, or fire official responsible for questions or work.
Do not remove, relocate, replace, or rewire a building-provided alarm without the authority to do so. Renters should report a missing, damaged, silenced, or expired unit in writing and keep a copy. A qualified electrician should handle hardwired work; the U.S. Fire Administration makes that boundary explicit.
Choose by function, label, and fit
Smoke detection
The U.S. Fire Administration says ionization and photoelectric alarms respond to different kinds of fires. Its current public guidance recommends either both types or a dual-sensor smoke alarm in homes and places where people sleep. It also recommends interconnected smoke alarms so one alarm sounding can sound the others. These are national baselines; the locally adopted code and exact alarm instructions still control the installation.
Write down four selection checks:
- Hazard: Does the label say the unit is a smoke alarm, CO alarm, combination alarm, heat alarm, or another device?
- Certification: Does the exact model have the applicable listing or certification record, not only a marketplace claim or mark in a product photo?
- Power and connection: Does its power source and interconnection method match the approved plan for the building?
- Alert: Can every person who may be home recognize and respond to it, including while sleeping?
The CPSC has warned that counterfeit safety marks are being used on consumer products. Check the model and certification record rather than trusting a printed mark alone, and search the current CPSC recalls and product-safety warnings before installing a new or unfamiliar alarm.
Carbon monoxide detection
Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless. The CPSC recommends battery-operated CO alarms or alarms with battery backup on every level and outside sleeping areas. Use the exact manual for mounting position, permitted rooms, distance from fuel-burning equipment, environmental limits, and signal meanings. Do not copy a distance from a different model.
For a combination smoke-and-CO unit, verify that the exact model is certified for both functions. Also verify that one location satisfies both sets of instructions and local requirements. If the placement rules conflict, separate alarms may be needed; ask the local fire marshal, property manager, or qualified installer rather than improvising.
Interconnection and accessible alerts
Interconnection is useful only when the units are designed and approved to work together. Do not mix wired, wireless, bridge, or smart-home products based on a shared logo or app without checking every compatibility instruction. Test the interconnected group using the manufacturer’s procedure and any building test protocol.
USFA notes that alarms and accessories for people who are deaf or hard of hearing may use strobes or vibration. Match the alert method to the person, the room, and sleep conditions. Confirm that the accessory activates from the intended alarm and continues to work through the relevant power failure. A phone notification is not proof that a required audible, visible, vibrating, or interconnected alarm function is present.
Build the placement plan room by room
Use public guidance as the starting layer, then resolve the details with the manual and local authority.

Do not solve recurring cooking or steam alarms by removing a battery, covering the alarm, or moving it to an unapproved location. USFA advises using an approved hush feature and following the alarm instructions. Ask the fire department or installer about a repeated activation that the manual does not resolve.
Maintain each alarm by its own instructions
USFA advises testing smoke alarms monthly. CPSC also advises regular alarm and battery checks. Put the exact procedure on the household calendar; the test button may not evaluate every external accessory, interconnection path, app notification, or monitoring service.
Use this maintenance record:
- Test: Follow the manual, including notifications required before testing a monitored or building-connected system.
- Power: Record the installed battery type and replace or service it when the manual, signal, or building procedure requires.
- Cleaning: Use only the method the manufacturer permits. Paint, covers, tape, sprays, and unapproved cleaners can interfere with an alarm.
- Age: USFA says smoke alarms should be replaced 10 years from the manufacture date. CO and combination-alarm service lives vary; follow the unit’s replace-by date, end-of-life signal, and manual.
- Faults and recalls: Act on a fault, failed test, physical damage, recall, or missing instructions instead of treating a silent unit as protection.
A sealed or advertised long-life battery does not remove the need to test, clean, recognize fault signals, or replace the whole unit when instructed. Never use a flame, vehicle exhaust, appliance exhaust, or an unapproved aerosol to test an alarm.
Record what happens during an outage
Trace each warning path separately:
- A battery-only alarm may keep local detection but have no remote notice.
- A hardwired alarm may have backup power, but the battery type and behavior depend on the exact unit.
- A plug-in CO alarm may need a functioning backup battery.
- Wireless interconnection, a hub, Wi-Fi, internet service, cellular service, cloud processing, monitoring, and a phone can fail independently.
- A strobe, bed shaker, relay, or other accessory may have a different backup arrangement from the alarm that triggers it.
Do not cut power to a hardwired or building system as an improvised test. Use the approved test process and ask the responsible electrician, alarm provider, or property manager for written outage behavior. What an alarm cannot do
An alarm does not:
- prevent a fire, stop carbon monoxide production, or make combustion safe;
- guarantee that smoke or CO will reach the sensor before conditions become dangerous;
- replace appliance maintenance, a safe generator site, or local inspections;
- guarantee that a sleeping or disabled person will hear, see, feel, understand, or be able to act on the signal;
- guarantee a remote alert, monitoring response, fire-department dispatch, or service during a power or network outage;
- replace a practiced route out of the home.
